It can be easy living in Bangkok if you are based near the BTS or MRT, but taxis, tuk-tuks and motorcycles taxis are cheap and abundant. If using motor bike taxis or tuk tuk you need to work out a mutually agreed price with the driver before starting your trip. The bus system is extensive and very cheap once you get the hang of it. If you are using the BTS or the MRT often there are several ticket options that are available. Check on-line or at the ticket offices that are located at all stations for the options that best suit you. There is always at least one person on duty who can speak English. The traffic here is legendary and becomes part of your everyday planning whether getting to work or going out on the weekends. Using seatbelts is only law for the front seats in cars/taxis and wearing motor bike helmets is law, but few motor bike taxis will have a spare for you if you plan to use this mode of public transport.

The cost of living is much lower than in the west with rents staring at around 3,000 Baht per month and going up from there. It all depends on your location and the facilities that you require in your condo or apartment. Most rental properties are fully furnished and ready to move in. You normally will have to pay a deposit of 2 months’ rent plus a month in advance when you sign the lease. This will be returned to you when you vacate the property if no problems occur. This is the same as in most Western countries. The method of rent payment will vary from building to building and this will be explained to you at lease signing. Most bills (electricity, water, cable television, phone and internet) can be paid at the local 7/11, but only if not near or at due date. It is always best to pay early and not get caught out. You can even pay for most budget airlines tickets at your 7/11. Getting cable television and internet wi-fi to your rental property requires a contract with your service provider and may need you to show a work contract or work permit. Permission from your building may also be needed so it is a good idea to check things out with your building manager or landlord before getting started. 7/11 are open 24/7 and can become your one stop destination for pretty everything. Banking hours vary depending on location, but within department store complexes and shopping malls, most are open 7 days a week. ATMs are everywhere and in multi-language options making life easy.
